Chilton’s primary design feature, introduced in 1924, was a clever and effective pneumatic filling system (U.S. Patent No 1,134,936). In response to reports that some people disliked the long section and cap of the original design, Chilton redesigned their pens in 1927 to have a more conventional profile with a blindcap attached to the pneumatic tube that extends from the back of the barrel. This pen is filled by pulling the blind cap backward from the barrel-end to extend the metal tube. When one places a finger over the hole at the end of the barrel and pushes the barrel back down, the pressure inside deflates the sac. One then submerses the nib and releases one’s finger to fill the pen with one hand. The pneumatic filler in this pen has great pressure, sucking in a lot of ink in and shooting it out like a squirt gun, if you’re so inclined.

Length: This oversized model has a thick girth and measures 5 1/16” capped.

Nib: Oversized 14k Chilton Pen nib lays down a firm yet smooth and consistent XF line.

Condition: Gold-filled trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws apart from a tiny point of wear on each side of the clip ball visible under a loupe. Celluloid has a smooth, lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. The only notable flaw on this pen is a small chip (approx 1mm wide) along 3 of the ribs on the blind cap (see close-up photo). Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible.

Details: The Chilton pen company was founded in 1923 by Seth Chilton Crocker, son of Seth Sears Crocker of Crocker Pen Co fame. Chilton was based in Boston, Massachusetts before making the move to Long Island City in 1927. Chilton is prized by collectors for their heigh quality and innovative designs. But since they were a smaller maker with smaller production numbers, these pens can be hard to come by today.
