Vintage: 1920s

Make: Conklin

Model: Gold-filled all metal pen

Color: Checker and bar pattern

Materials: Gold-filled over hard rubber

Filling System: Lever filler (resacced and guaranteed to fill and write as designed)

Length: This pen measures 4 7/8” capped and 6 1/2” posted.

Nib: Super-Flexible, long-tined Conklin #3 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to an impressive 4B+ (approx 2.7mm!) under light pressure. Thin hairlines strongly responsive snap-back, widest max line width of the batch, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian.

Condition: This pen presents well but does have a few notable flaws under close inspection. The crown of the cap and barrel-end bot have a shallow ding, there are 3 minor, pin-sized dings on the barrel that are made inconspicuous by blending into the pattern, and there is one nick on the cap’s indicia that penetrates to the base metal. The only brassing on this pen is confined to the clip: a spot on the top and another on the bottom.

Details: Following Wahl (see #5 below) in the 1920s, Conklin began making pens of an all-metal construction that were machine turned in an array of Art Deco patterns. Again like Wahl, these pens had a shorter capped length but posted long. This gold-filled model, chased in a checker and bar pattern, has streamlined ends and Conklin’s patented rocker clip that raises at the bottom when the top is depressed.
