Vintage: 1920s
Make: unknown
Model: Baby ring top overlay
Color: silver, hand-engraved Art Nouveau pattern
Materials: sterling silver over black hard rubber
Filling System: eyedropper (the section unscrews for the barrel to be filled with an eyedropper/syringe).
Length: This diminutive pen has a slender girth and measures 3” capped and 3 7/8” posted. The small size of this one makes it perfect to wear as a pendant on a necklace.
Nib: 14k long-tined, Warranted nib is a Factory Stub with Super-Flexible softness and variation. Under normal pressure it lays down a smooth and consistent F line on the down-strokes and XF line on the cross-strokes. That line widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.1mm) under light pressure
Condition: As cherished heirlooms, precious metal overlays of this era often feature personalizations. This one bears the professionally engraved monogram “M.C.” in a stylized font on the barrel indicia, designed for this purpose (see timestamp photo). Overlay has no dents, dings, deep scratches, or other notable flaws. No brassing as one would expect for solid Sterling. Black hard rubber parts are factory black with no scratches or other noteworthy blemishes.
Details: It has no makers mark, just “Sterling” stamped on the plain end of the barrel. But its construction and intricately hand-engraved details attest to its first-tier workmanship. The Sterling overlay is hand engraved with an Art Nouveau motif resembling Waterman’s Hand Engraved Vine pattern with a single flower at the top of the cap.
