Vintage: 1920s
Make: Wahl-EVersharp
Model: "Tulip Clip"
Color: Black, Grecian Border pattern
Materials: Black chased hard rubber, gold-plated trim
Filling System: Lever filler (resacced and guaranteed to fill and write as designed)
Length: This short, standard girth model measures 4 5/16” capped and 5 5/8” posted.
Nib: Super-Flexible 14k Wahl Tempoint #2 nib looks to be a properly sized replacement from an earlier Wahl Tempoint pen. It lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under light pressure. Needlepoint hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an exceptional choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian.
Condition: The only notable flaw on this pen is some brassing to the trim, mostly to the bottom cap band and a sliver around the decorative ring on the barrel-end, but also 2 small spots on the sides of the lever at its apex. Hard rubber retains its factory black color with no discernible oxidation. Chasing is factory deep and sharp with no discernible wear. Manufacturer imprint on cap’s metal crown is deep and fully legible.
Details: This pen features a deluxe trim configuration with an unusual spade clip attached to the gold-filled crown of the cap by a tulip-shaped base. This charming element, at once decorative and functional, has long prompted collectors to refer to these models as Wahl's "Tulip Clip" pens. Whether the shape was intended also to signify 'W' (for Wahl) is unknown. This example is made of black hard rubber chased in the Art Deco Grecian Border pattern.
