Vintage: 1930s
Make: Waterman
Model: Nurse's Set
Color: ivory pearl
Filling System: lever-filler (resacced and ready to write)
Length: FP model measures 4 3/4” capped and 6” posted.
Nib: 14k SUPERFLEX Ideal #2A nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.1mm) under light pressure. Thin hairlines, responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian.
Condition: Professionally heat-stamped personalization of “May Ball” on the barrels. Color is even yet more of a cream hue than mint ivory pearl. Nickel-plated trim is clean side from some subtle thinning of the plating at the top of the clip and cap bands. Due to their construction and shrinkage over the decades, some celluloid Watermans of this period develop fine fissures confined to the ends where the seams of the celluloid are joined. Other than that, the celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy flaws – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on barrel of FP is factory deep and fully legible. MP is fully functional, expelling, retracting, and gripping lead as designed.
Details: In the late 1930s and into the 1940s, Waterman manufactured pens and sets specifically tailored to doctors and nurses. I believe this to be an earlier, Canadian iteration of a Waterman Nurse’s set, which shares much in common with the design of the Waterman 32.
