Vintage: 1960s

Make: Sheaffer

Model: PFM I (Pen For Men)

Color/Pattern: Black

Materials: Bakelite stainless steel trim

Filling System: Snorkel filler. Sheaffer's famous Rube Goldberg Snorkel filling system, which provides a clean fill even from the very bottom of the bottle since only the Snorkel tube needs to be submerged, not the nib or feed. This pen has received full filling system overhaul with all seals and sac replaced. Guaranteed to fill to capacity with good pressure and no leaks. To fill one: (1) turns the blindcap to fully extend the Snorkel tube from the feed; (2) pulls the blindcap back to fully extend the pump; (3) submerses the Snorkel tube in ink; then (4) depresses the blindcap back into the barrel with one smooth stroke.

Length: This PFM is an oversized pen with a thick girth and a capped length of 5 5/16”

Nib: Palladium Silver inlaid nib lays down a buttery smooth and consistent F/M line

Condition: Stainless steel trim shows no brassing or other notable flaws. Plastic surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes apart from a couple minor scratches on the section from capping over the years and one pin-sized nick on the back of the cap (see photo). Manufacturer imprint on cap is deep and fully legible.

Details: Sheaffer’s PFM (“Pen For Men”) was marketed as an oversized version of their Thin Model Snorkel pens. The PFM has a thick barrel girth yet its section is ergonomically tapered, narrowing closer to the nib to fit the raccoon pawed and hamfisted alike. Other ergonomically innovative features include spring-loaded clip, clutched cap (like the Parker 51's), and Sheaffer's Snorkel filling system.
