Vintage: c.1922-3
Make: Sheaffer
Model: 36BC Giftie Overlay
Color: Gold (line and bar pattern)
Materials: Gold-filled over hard rubber
Filling System: Lever-filler (resacced and guaranteed to fill and write as designed)
Length: This full-sized model measures 5” capped.
Nib: Super-Flexible 14k Sheaffer Self-Filling #3 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XXF/XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under light pressure.
Condition: There is a professionally engraved personalization on the barrel indicia in elegant Copperplate script, which reads “S. Feigen.” Remarkably, this pen shows no brassing whatsoever. The only notable flaw on this pen is some short scratches and pin-sized marks confined to the top 1/4 of the cap. Hard rubber parts are factory black. Manufacturer imprints on the barrel and clip are deep and fully legible.
Details: Like Parker’s, Sheaffer’s early overlays are orders of magnitude more difficult to find than Waterman’s. And full-sized examples are scarcer and more desirable than short models. This early Sheaffer was made when the company was still equipping their pens with nibs marked “Self-Filling” – less than a decade after their first lever-filling pens. In catalogues of the period, they were advertised in boxes with matching pencils as “Giftie” sets under the banner of “Gifts that Last.” This 36BC model can be found in Sheaffer catalogues from 1922-3.
