Vintage: c.1940

Make: Waterman's

Model: Nurses' set

Color: Ivory Pearl

Materials: Celluloid, nickel-plated trim

Filling System: Lever-filler (resacced and guaranteed to fill to factory capacity)

Length: I believe this to be the largest Nurses’ set with FP measuring 4 3/4” capped and 6” posted

Nib: Super-Flexible 14k Waterman Ideal Canada 2A nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under light pressure

Condition: This set has the best color of any I’ve ever come across. Most ivory pearl Watermans have discolored to yellow, orange, or brown. But this set retains its original creamy white color with no discernible discoloration. Nickel-plated trim is clean with no brassing aside from the typical sliver on the clip balls. All 3 pieces show light scratching on the clips and the thermometer case has some dulling of the original luster on the cap bands, but trim is exceptionally well-preserved on the whole. Celluloid surfaces are smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on barrel of FP is deep and fully legible. MP is fully functional, expelling, retracting, and gripping lead as designed – though it does take more turns of the cap than is typical. A stunningly well-kept set and an exquisite piece of Canadian history.

Details: In the late 1930s and into the 1940s, Waterman manufactured pens and sets specifically tailored to doctors and nurses. This is an earlier Nurse’s set that was exclusively made in Canada. It shares much in common with the design of the Waterman 32. It’s made of ivory pearl celluloid complemented by nickel-plated trim. The set consists of a fountain pen, mechanical pencil, and thermometer case that includes a vintage mercury thermometer imprinted ‘Casbono Hospital Montreal’. Thermometer case has a little red dot embedded in the top of the cap to distinguish it from the pencil in the pocket when viewed from above. Also included is the original white leather Watermans case for this set, which is inscribed on the inside with the original owner’s name: ‘Sheila McDougal, RN’.
